The 5th panel discusses one of the fundamental principles of democratic systems and asks how the idea and practice of “The Rule of Law” is relevant in sustaining democracy – and what it took and meant in the past and what it might take and mean in the present to destroy or defend it. The panelists will assess this moment in time, particularly the nature and consequences of the Trump administration’s legal stands and practices in various policy areas, in light of their respective scholarly and professional expertise. Our speakers are: Deborah S. Gonzalez (Roger Williams Law School), Benjamin Carter Hett (CUNY), Mohamed Camara (Columbia Univ.), Samuel Miner (IfZ Munich) and Ute Frevert (Max-Weber Foundation), who will also chair the panel.
